REHABILITATION OF A BUILDING ON TRAVESSA DO ALMARGEM . LISBON 2014 1500 m2. CLIENT - EMPIRE 27 . PHOTOGRAPHS - JOÃO WENGOROVIUS AND MDS
The Pátio Afonso de Albuquerque building dating from 1878 was composed of ground floor plus 3 floors. It is located on the southern slope that descends from Sé to Rio, and is part of a huge block crossed by tunnels that go up the slope.  The building was divided in half by stairs, it had two apartments per floor, of large typologies, and was completely vacant and in very poor condition.
The program foresaw the division of space into smaller apartments, which led to the creation of two new fractions, increasing to a total of 4 per floor, while respecting the original structure of the building. The entrance was maintained, another flight of stairs was added leading to the unused attic, the roof was redone, with the original design, dimensions and inclination, only dormer windows were introduced in the alignment of the lower spans for better use of the space from the attic. An elevator was placed next to the stairs, in order to give access to all fractions but not interfere with the roof design.
Inside the fractions, the option was to recover essential heritage elements such as chimneys, doors, guards and shutters.
During the archaeological excavation phase, two relevant architectural elements were found: a large arch that is thought to have belonged to the Sé wall, which is on the lobby wall, occupies two floors. This element has been studied and covered.
Next to the main façade, a column with a Manueline capital appeared, which was integrated into the store space.
