3rd PLACE PUBLIC DESIGN COMPETITION FOR THE PROJECT OF THE "ALFAZINA" OP-10 HOUSING SET, ALMADA  . SETUBAL . 2020 14 776 m2. CLIENT - INSTITUTE OF HOUSING AND URBAN REHABILITATION
CO-AUTHOR: ARCHITECT RODRIGO COELHO
The proposal is assumed as a linear set of ten blocks whose height varies between 4 and 5 floors, which develops along Rua de Alfazina, adapting to the slope. The proposed building is the result of the repetition of a base module (about 15.00 meters deep and 24.35 meters long), whose variations are expressed only at the level of its height. Rua Alfazina de Cima is the main backbone of the complex, with two secondary streets, which run parallel to the main street and guarantee access to the parking lot of the semi-basement buildings, on the opposite facades.
With regard to articulations with existing spaces and routes, the solutions developed for the urban design and public spaces tend to promote relations of continuity and articulation at the pedestrian level.
The proposal for public spaces establishes the western fringe as a strategic area, both in terms of landscape and in terms of potential articulations that can be developed with the valley to the west. Here it is proposed the location of community gardens with a linear development along the western limit.
As far as residential buildings are concerned, the proposal unfolds each base block into two mirrored bodies, approximately 6.45 m deep by 24.35 m long, allowing the creation of two main facades and two secondary and partially interior facades.
The proposed organization of the dwellings is based on a search for systematization, rationality and economy of means that is expressed, namely, in the metric of the adopted spatial and structural module, as well as in a principle of repetition of elements that will also simplify the construction processes.
The exterior image of the buildings is characterized by the repetition of a standard span metric, which are torn along the entire height of the ceiling in continuous panels of walls covered in exposed brick, which are only interrupted by the exposed concrete slabs that run through. the entire perimeter of the buildings.
Responding to the requirements of the preliminary program in terms of sustainability and environmental comfort, the proposal seeks, in addition, to ensure these objectives, in different ways thought of in a global and articulated way, namely: by considering thermal comfort and passive lighting strategies, by using a construction with a reduced environmental footprint, with an efficient life cycle and efficient use of water.
