From the time when it was designed in the late 19th century to the present day, Avenida da República has lost the Haussmannian spirit that gave it origin, with the increase in road lanes, the loss of trees in the original alignments and the replacement of the buildings.
The main objective of the intervention was, therefore, to recover the spirit of the original Boulevard, allowing for a better pedestrian use of that space, the increase of tree alignments and the inclusion of a cycle path.
The reduction of parking and the elimination of a carriageway in each of the secondary channels of local access allowed freeing up space for: the creation of a 3m central divider, where a new alignment of Plátanos now exists; the widening of the side dividers where the bike path is implemented on the west side; the widening of the sidewalks next to the buildings where two more tree lines are created (which went from 2 to 5).
The impact of the intervention is enormous in terms of pedestrian and cyclist use. Today people can walk along the Avenue and there are benches where you can rest and terraces for outdoor living. The planting of 300 trees along the Avenue brought a completely new environment, with small trees that bloom in spring, on the side walks.
