The Study aims to verify the physical feasibility and technical complexities of implementing a public transport channel between Benfica Station and Gare do Oriente, passing through the 2nd ring road, Av. Marechal Gomes da Costa and Alameda dos Oceanos, in Lisbon.
Along this route of approximately 11.5km, we positioned 13 Stations where the main location criteria were: the surrounding urban density, the number of potential users and the physical constraints for their implementation and construction. The stations are also the result of adaptations and reformulations of some unique points of the public space.
The proposed transversal profile is based on the layout of the recent project for the 2nd ring road, which included three or more carriageways in each direction and a central tree-lined divider measuring 3.50 m. The channels to be dedicated to public transport would occupy the central lanes of each direction, keeping whenever possible the dimension of the central separator. The stations would punctually occupy the separator and the exit of pedestrians to the city is done by tunnel or by air passage.
The addition of pedestrian crossings on the 2nd ring road would help to mitigate the physical barrier that it now constitutes in the urban fabric that has grown around it over the years.
